A Bi-National Opinion Survey Comparing Nigeria and the USA on Activism

Project background

Activism has been a significant force in shaping societal change across the world. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the role of activism in promoting democracy, human rights, and social justice. Nigeria and the United States of America (USA) are two countries with a rich history of activism. While the nature of activism in each country differs, both have played a crucial role in shaping their respective societies.
Nigeria's activist tradition can be traced back to the colonial era, where anti-colonial movements sought to end British rule and establish an independent state. Despite gaining independence in 1960, Nigeria has remained in a constant struggle for democracy and good governance, leading to the emergence of notable activists and movements such as the Civil Society Coalition, Bring Back Our Girls Movement, and the EndSARS protests of 2020. In the United States, activism has been a critical part of the country's history since its inception. From the civil rights movement of the 1960s to the recent Black Lives Matter movement and beyond, American activists have worked tirelessly to challenge social inequality and promote change that has left indeliable marks on the country’s history.
This project involves a collaboration with a prestigious American university to examine and contrast the nature of activism in Nigeria and the USA. Our research endeavors to explore the factors that have shaped the distinct forms of activism in these two nations, providing a deeper understanding of the contexts and people’s perceptions of activism in each society.

Challenge

The political environment in both countries also presents a challenge in conducting opinion polls. In Nigeria, political unrest and corruption are major issues that impact the way individuals participate in activism. The fear of persecution from the government is a real concern for many activists in Nigeria, one that may cause respondents to withhold or alter their responses, leading to a less accurate representation of public opinion.
In the United States, the widespread distrust of the media make it challenging to obtain unbiased and accurate responses from individuals. Many people have become skeptical of the media's reporting and may be hesitant to participate in opinion polls, leading to a biased or unrepresentative sample. Additionally, the current political climate in the US is highly polarized, with people often holding strongly entrenched views. This may lead to respondents giving socially desirable answers instead of their true opinions
