Christmas celebration in 2023: Togetherness Tops the List
In the Netherlands, Christmas is celebrated in diverse ways, including spending time with family, shopping, exchanging gifts, or through spiritual and religious practices. For the majority of Dutch families, Christmas is all about spending quality time with one another. According to **TGM Christmas Survey 2023** in the Netherlands, a whopping 81% said they most look forward to cherishing the company of loved ones this holiday season. 76% of men and 86% of women especially value these cozy gatherings around the dinner table, where new memories are made to last a lifetime.
While family celebrations remain important to many, Christmas is increasingly seen as a time for shopping and gift-giving, especially among younger adults. The survey found that 19% of respondents aged 18-24 believe the holiday season is primarily about shopping and exchanging gifts. This highlights society's growing embrace of Christmas' commercial aspects. With the advent of Black Friday and other major sales events, people eagerly seize the opportunity to snag attractive deals and discounts, allowing them to indulge in a festive shopping spree.

Regarding their holiday budgets, a sizeable 67% of Dutch consumers say they plan on Christmas spending about the same amount as last year. It's interesting to note that there isn't a big gap in spending habits on Christmas between men (68%) and women (67%). In addition, consistent spending plans persist across age groups, signaling a collective balance between enjoying the spirit of giving while remaining financially prudent.
Thoughtful Gifting Trends for Christmas in the Netherlands
A significant findings from our Christmas shopping survey 2023 in the Netherlands indicates that a substantial number of Dutch citizens are embracing a "down-to-earth" perspective on gifting. The focus is on thoughtful choices, with a notable inclination towards gift cards and vouchers. Additionally, clothing, footwear, and toys also stand out as popular gift options. It appears that the Dutch are keen on ensuring their gifts seamlessly align with the needs and preferences of the recipient, making the act of giving truly thoughtful.
