Hello Kamila! Thank you for joining us today. As we approach International Women’s Day, we’re eager to hear from inspiring individuals like yourself. Could you please take a moment to introduce yourself?
Sure can! Hello everyone, my name is Kamila Tamas and I’m a Survey Programming Manager at TGM Research. Thank you for having me here today!
Thank you, Kamila. Alright… let’s get started!
First question: How do you think attitudes and perspectives toward gender equality have evolved over the years? Has it gotten better or worse?
Attitudes and perspectives toward gender equality have definitely evolved over time, which is great to see. But let's be real, progress isn't the same everywhere. Some places are doing better than others. Sure, there are laws and policies to promote gender equality such as legislation addressing equal pay, sexual harassment, gender-based violence, etc… But I think there’s still a long way to go and it involves the mindset! Why is it still expected that women have to juggle a full-time job and run the household solo? We need to change mindsets, not just laws.
Who are some women, historical or contemporary, who have inspired you, and why?
Hmm, all women who break stereotypes and defy societal expectations by pursuing non-traditional career paths, hobbies, or interests without fear of judgment are my inspiration. One of my all-time inspirations is Marie Curie. Despite facing significant obstacles as a woman in a male-dominated field, Marie Curie persevered and pursued her passion for science with determination and resilience. She made history as the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and remains the only person to have won Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields (Physics and Chemistry). Also… she was born in Warsaw – where I am from!
Do you think having a IWD is important? In what ways do you believe IWD contributes to global conversations and actions towards gender equality?
Yes, of course, I think International Women's Day is important. IWD inspires women to take action towards achieving their goals, pursuing their passions, and challenging societal norms and expectations. It serves as a reminder not only for us as women that we have the power to shape our own destiny and contribute to positive change in the world, but also for men to reflect on their personal actions and contributions to gender equality. It prompts men to consider how they can support the women in their lives, challenge harmful stereotypes, and advocate for positive change in their communities and workplaces.
What challenges do you foresee in the ongoing pursuit of gender equality?
Personally, I think educating men. Not saying men are against the idea of gender equality but ‘inspiring’ them to take action could be a challenging task. For example, taking on more household duties. I think it's important to promote gender equality, challenge traditional gender roles, provide education on the value of shared responsibilities, offer support for men in developing domestic skills, and encourage open communication and negotiation within relationships regarding household tasks.
Has TGM actively worked to inspire inclusion within the organization?
Yes, and I think TGM is doing a very good job so far in keeping it up.
What measures have been taken to create a more inclusive environment for all team members?
One measure TGM has been taking is ensuring diverse representation in leadership positions, decision-making processes, and project teams to reflect the full range of backgrounds, perspectives, and talents within the organization. Did you know 50% of TGM's leadership positions are occupied by women? This is why I am incredibly proud to be a part of this team! Another measure worth mentioning is our flexible work arrangements. We are offered remote work options, flexible hours, and parental leave policies, to accommodate the diverse needs and responsibilities of team members and promote work-life balance. Our boss, Greg Laski, often giving us spotlight as well (laughs). He gives us recognition and celebrate our achievements, contributions, and successes and sometimes through public acknowledgment (e.g. posts on LinkedIn, Facebook) too!
What other measures should be employed?
Recognizing and celebrating the diverse backgrounds, cultures, traditions, and contributions of team members through events, activities, and initiatives that promote cultural awareness and appreciation.
Thank you for your sharing Kamila!
