WHAT IS TGM RAMADAN GLOBAL STUDY?

This project is the most recent and comprehensive study on the 2022 Ramadan celebration worldwide. It aims to capture the unique behavior preceding the holy month of Ramadan and its impact. Our report shares detailed insights from consumers across the Muslim world and how companies and marketers can connect during this time.

The TGM Ramadan International Survey provides a better understanding of how customers behave during the most significant month in the Muslim world.     The month that Muslims long for the most
    Ramadan is widely celebrated globally - 94% of Muslims will celebrate during this year's Ramadan. The vast majority of Muslims (96%) await Ramadan passionately to cleanse themselves through worship and to spend time with loved ones.

    Spiritual thirst
    94% of Muslims will celebrate Ramadan in 2022, and 75% of them will increase their worship activities; this comes with the lifting of covid restrictions that prevented them from joining the Tarawih prayer at the mosques last year.

    COVID won't affect this year's celebration for most of the Muslims.
    The pandemic reshaped how the Muslim community prepares for, lives, and celebrates the holy month last year. In 2022, however, things will get back to normal for most of the people celebrating Ramadan.

    A Ramadan with a taste of normalcy
    After being prevented from spending a normal Ramadan due to the pandemic, Muslims this year are looking forward to the holy month surrounded by friends and family (65%) and would travel back home (61%) to see them, as they feel Covid barely poses a threat (26%).

    This year many more Muslims will finally go back to their hometown for Ramadan/Eid.
    For millions of Muslims around the world, Ramadan has been upended for two years running by the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Mobile devices are man’s best friend during Ramadan
    The use of mobile devices dominates media consumption for Muslims during Ramadan compared to the rest of the year (74%). They will mostly use their mobile for social media (71%), watching videos (63%) and communicating through apps (69%).

    The many uses of the smartphone for the Muslims in Ramadan
    Most Muslims will use their smartphone for self-teaching (87%), send greetings (85%) and stay entertained by watching videos (77%).

    A small village and convenient shopping
    84% of Muslims will use social media to stay up to date with what is happening locally and around the world, while 86% of it would use it to be informed about what interests them. People will also use these platforms as a convenient method to find attractive promotions (68%) and to shop (70%).

    Old tech is still strongly present in the holy month
    The TV is still the companion of many Muslims during Ramadan. 61% said they will increase their television consumption throughout the month.

    More than 90% of Muslims will be fasting this upcoming Ramadan.
    Fasting is one of the five core pillars of Islam. It is believed to cleanse the soul and is a time for Muslims to work on self-discipline and empathy for the less fortunate. It helps them realise the struggles that others may go through.

    More money to spend on food
    This year spending budget on food will increase substantially. This increase could be related to the fact that families will finally be able to gather after Covid’s suffocating restrictions are gone but also by the increase of consumer prices.

    A Ramadan of convenience
    While cooking at home still dominates the food consumption method during the month (87%), food delivery services will be more relied upon this Ramadan (59%).

    Ordering food through mobile apps will be the go-to method for Muslims to get their Ramadan meals (49%) followed by online orders (22%).

    Ramadan is the time for giving back
    Almost every Muslim (96%) agrees that Ramadan is the month of empathy and giving.

    Charity at the core of Ramadan
    Almost every Muslim (96%) agrees that Ramadan is the month of empathy and giving. 83% said they would be volunteering to help their community.

    More generous this year
    People plan to donate more this year than they did in the previous one. 87% will be donating this year, 44% of them will be even more generous than last year.

    A less traditional way of giving
    Muslims are increasingly using technology to share with the needy. Donating money through online fundraisers is something 61% of Muslims said they did in the past.

    Ramadan is often a time for shopping, whether it’s to buy home decorations, ready special meals or find Eid al-Fitr gifts for loved ones. But, with the adjustment of routines around eating, sleeping, exercising, etc., also comes a significant adjustment in shopping patterns and an openness to novelty.

    Religious sensitivity
    The majority of Muslims agree that brands should have religious awareness when marketing their products to them (74%).

    Last-minute shopping
    Shoppers will do their essential Ramadan shopping right before the start of the holy month (43%). The same thing applies to Eid al-Fitr (25%)

    In the hunt for the best deal
    Many Muslims will try to save money by looking for promotions. 71% say that Ramadan is the best time to find the best deals.

    Quality & authenticity
    76% of shoppers will be looking for high-quality products, followed by the authenticity of the product and brand trust (72%).

    The gift that keeps on giving
    The Mobile is the convenient tool that shoppers use to discover Ramadan purchases and new ideas (73%).

    Ramadan 2022 will start, depending on the moon sighting, in most of the countries on 2nd of April. Ten days before it did last year (April 13th)

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

The survey was carried out between February 25 and 6th of March 2022 using the method of online interviews in 18 countries on a representative sample of 18-45.
The sample is representative of the adult Muslim population of the given country in terms of gender and age.
