The global sports betting industry has experienced rapid growth in recent years with an annual growth rate of 12.02% expected between 2023 and 2028 (Technavio, 2024). Methodology: Conducted between 01 June and 31 July 2024, the survey used Internet interviews (CAWI) to collect data from a diverse sample of individuals aged 18 to 55+, across 34 countries and 5 global regions.

FAQ: Key Insights on Global Gambling and Sports Betting Trends

How are betting habits changing around the world?
Globally, sports betting activity is witnessing a solid trend of growth and stability. 66% of global bettors are either maintaining or increasing their engagement with sports betting, which is significantly higher than the percentage of bettors who are declining. This trend can be attributed to ingrained habits and the convenience provided by online and mobile platforms. Furthermore, the market continues to attract new participants, with a small group deciding to place their first bet in the past 12 months.
Why do people bet on sports?

The main motivation for sports betting is the potential for monetary gain, with over half of global bettors citing this as their primary reason.

However, sports betting is about more than just the potential winnings. Bettors are also drawn to the excitement and entertainment it adds to the experience. Betting turns passive viewing into an interactive, emotionally charged event. For many, the thrill, competition, and deeper connection to the sport are just as compelling as any financial reward.

Do most people bet online or in person?

With the rapid advancement of digital technology, consumer engagement has shifted significantly toward online betting platforms. According to the TGM Global Gambling and Sports Betting Report 2024, 77% now prefer placing their sports bets online or via mobile apps, leaving just a quarter who still bet in person at sportsbooks or casinos.

This shift is primarily driven by convenience, as bettors can place wagers anytime, anywhere, with access to better odds, more options, and real-time updates. While this convenience results in higher engagement and more frequent betting, it also presents challenges, particularly in areas such as market regulation, consumer protection, and transaction security.
