Uncovering the views of Southeast Asian youth on politics, multiculturalism, religion, and digital participation through a regional cross-country study.

Youth Perspectives on Civic Engagement in Southeast Asia

Project background

In an age marked by digital transformation and evolving civic identities, the voices of youth are emerging as powerful agents of change. As Southeast Asia continues its dynamic growth, understanding how its young citizens, particularly those in higher education, perceive civic engagement, political participation, and social issues becomes increasingly vital.

To advance academic inquiry and policy formulation on these matters, a premier research institution commissioned a comprehensive survey to examine youth attitudes across six Southeast Asian countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

The study seeks to illuminate how university students between 18 and 24 years old perceive their roles in society, their views on politics, religiosity, multiculturalism, and the growing influence of digitization, including participation through social media and trust in digital communities.

Challenge

  • Regional Diversity and Sampling Precision: One of the core challenges was implementing a standardized research framework across six culturally, politically, and linguistically diverse countries. The project demanded precise quota fulfillment with 500 student respondents per country, maintaining a balanced representation by self-identified gender and academic disciplines (STEM vs. non-STEM). A deviation beyond a 60-40 ratio in either category was not permissible, which introduced significant operational complexity in recruitment and field execution.
  • Sensitivity to Local Norms and Political Climate: Given the topics covered, including political attitudes, freedom of expression, and ethnic/religious representation, cultural sensitivity and ethical integrity were essential throughout the research. Questions had to be carefully localized, and data collection strategies tailored to ensure respondent comfort and regulatory compliance in each country.
  • Complex and Extensive Questionnaire: The final questionnaire, comprising nearly 50 items, spanned a wide array of domains: socioeconomic perception, civic behavior (online and offline), attitudes toward democracy, religiosity, ideological leanings, social capital, and media usage. This depth required meticulous translation, cultural validation, and streamlined programming to ensure consistency and respondent engagement.
